NAFDAC Seals Chinese Supermarkets, Cosmetics Shops in Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese supermarkets in Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market, Abuja, for selling unregistered and banned products.

The agency disclosed this in a statement on Friday signed by its Deputy Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Adegboyega Osiyemi.

According to NAFDAC, the enforcement followed the directive of its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye. The operation, carried out by the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in collaboration with the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Substandard Medicines and Unwholesome Processed Foods, was led by Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer, Musa Embugushiki.

“The enforcement team confiscated and evacuated offending products worth over N170m,” the statement read.

The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in Jabi, were sealed after credible consumer complaints and surveillance revealed they were selling unregistered food items and products labelled exclusively in Chinese, violating NAFDAC’s mandatory English labelling policy.

NAFDAC added that despite initial denials by a foreign national at one of the outlets, the enforcement team confirmed the supermarket was in full operation, selling unregistered regulated products.

In a related operation, eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market were also sealed for selling banned, expired, and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs, and aesthetic medicines. Investigations further revealed that some individuals posed as dermatologists and pharmacists, prescribing and selling harmful products for body enhancement, skin whitening, aesthetic improvement, and male sexual performance.

Products seized during the raid included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement, Curvy Weight Gain, Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, Collagen, Royal Jelly, Glutathione, and Whitening Gummies.

NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health, warning that it would continue to clamp down on violators engaged in the distribution of harmful and unregistered products across the country.
