JUST IN: INEC Boss Prof. Yakubu Hands Over Leadership to Acting Chair
The outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially handed over the leadership of the Commission to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head.
The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, the longest-serving National Commissioner at the Commission, is expected to oversee the affairs of the electoral body and ensure the smooth continuation of its ongoing reforms and electoral preparations across the country.

Announcing the transition, Professor Yakubu urged INEC staff and management to accord the Acting Chairman the same level of cooperation and commitment extended to him during his tenure.
“I have today handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. I urge all commissioners and directors to give her the same level of cooperation and dedication that you have shown me,” Yakubu stated.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned administrator and legal practitioner, has been part of INEC’s management team since her appointment as a National Commissioner. Her leadership is expected to ensure stability and continuity in the Commission’s administrative and operational activities.
The development marks a temporary but significant leadership transition within INEC as it continues preparations for forthcoming electoral engagements nationwide.
