Army Condemns ‘False Narrative’ on Soldiers Seeking Permission from Killers in Plateau Attack

The Nigerian Army has dismissed a recent media report alleging that soldiers deployed to recover the corpses of church members killed in a recent attack in Plateau State sought permission from the same assailants before accessing the scene.

In a statement issued by Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Media Information Officer of Operation ENDURING PEACE, the Army described the report as “false, misleading, and part of a growing pattern of unsubstantiated claims by certain religious figures aimed at whipping up sentiments and undermining security efforts in the Joint Operations Area.”

The statement noted that the story lacked verifiable details such as the specific location, date of the incident, or identity of the alleged pastor who made the claim.

It added that the anonymity of the source and the sensational tone of the publication point to a coordinated attempt to erode public trust in the military and other security agencies working tirelessly to restore peace in the state.

“It is even more worrisome that some religious leaders, instead of promoting peace and community cooperation, appear to be leading a subtle campaign of misinformation against security agencies,” Major Zhakom stated.

“This trend not only undermines public confidence but also jeopardizes ongoing peace-building efforts across Plateau State.”

While condemning the attempt to malign troops’ image, the Army reaffirmed its professional commitment to impartiality, rapid response, and the protection of all citizens irrespective of ethnic or religious affiliation. It also emphasized that its operations are guided by strict adherence to rules of engagement and respect for human rights.

Operation ENDURING PEACE, according to the statement, remains focused on strengthening collaboration with genuine community and religious leaders to foster mutual trust and promote sustainable peace in Plateau and other parts of the Joint Operations Area.

The Army, therefore, urged the public to disregard the misleading publication and remain cautious about unverified reports capable of inflaming tensions or inciting mistrust among communities.
