Soldier Kills Suspect in Self-Defence at Warri Estate — Army

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a soldier attached to the Headquarters 63 Brigade, Asaba, killed a suspected criminal in self-defence during a confrontation at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, the incident occurred on October 13, 2025, when a soldier on duty at the estate gate halted a group of individuals attempting to force their way into the premises without subjecting themselves to mandatory security checks.

The statement explained that when the soldier questioned the group about their identity and purpose, they became aggressive and unruly. The altercation reportedly escalated into a violent scuffle, during which the soldier, acting in self-defence, deployed his armed combat skills and injured one of the intruders.

The injured suspect was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead. The Brigade noted that the Otu-Jeremi Police Division was promptly notified, and necessary action has been initiated in line with existing procedures.

He  reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights while urging residents of Delta State to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security personnel by complying with standard operating procedures at checkpoints and secured locations.

“The Brigade reiterates the need for members of the public to subject themselves to security checks in accordance with established regulations, as such measures are designed to safeguard lives and property,” the statement added.
