Troops Foil Drug Trafficking in Nasarawa as Suspect Flees, Abandons Vehicle

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have foiled an attempt to transport suspected hard drugs through Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, after intercepting a vehicle laden with illicit substances.

According to statement signed by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer, HQ JTF Operation Whirl Stroke, the incident occurred on October 14, 2025, when the troops, on a routine stop-and-search operation around Anguwan Malama in Akwanga, flagged down an ash-coloured Toyota Solara with registration number KJA-108FY (Lagos).

According to military sources, the driver of the vehicle immediately abandoned the car and fled into nearby bushes upon sighting the troops. Although the soldiers launched a swift pursuit, the suspect managed to escape.

A thorough search of the abandoned vehicle revealed several bags containing substances suspected to be marijuana. The vehicle and its contents have since been taken into military custody for further investigation and eventual handover to the appropriate authorities.

The Force Commander, Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, lauded the troops for their vigilance, resilience, and professionalism, which led to the interception. He conveyed his commendation through the Commander of Sector 2, Brigadier General D.C. Nwakonobi, and reiterated the operation’s commitment to denying criminal elements freedom of action, strengthening inter-agency cooperation, and ensuring sustained peace and stability across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States.

The military reaffirmed its resolve to intensify operations aimed at curbing the movement of illicit substances and other criminal activities within its operational areas.
