Army Begins Disciplinary Action Against Soldier Over Ondo Driver’s Death

The Nigerian Army has commenced disciplinary action against a soldier involved in the death of a commercial driver near Akunu, in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to a statement by Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, the incident occurred on Sunday, 13 October 2025, when the late driver, who was en route from Akure to Abuja, experienced mechanical issues close to a military checkpoint in Akunu.

Reports indicated that some passengers, frustrated by the delay, demanded a refund of their fares. One of them reportedly approached a soldier stationed at the checkpoint for assistance in retrieving their money. The situation escalated after the soldier intervened, leading to an altercation with the driver.

“The soldier displayed unprofessional conduct contrary to the Rules of Engagement and the Code of Conduct guiding his deployment,” the statement read.

Headquarters 32 Artillery Brigade said it immediately took responsibility for the incident, evacuating the injured driver to a nearby medical facility and covering his treatment expenses. An officer was also assigned to monitor his condition as he was transferred from Akoko to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Akure, and later to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he was confirmed dead on Monday, 14 October 2025.

Describing the conduct of the soldier as regrettable and unacceptable, the Brigade emphasized that justice would be served. “The soldier will face the full wrath of the law, and the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings will be made public,” the statement assured.

The Brigade also extended its condolences to the bereaved family and the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State. It pledged to cover the burial expenses and ensure the welfare and education of the deceased driver’s children are not disrupted.

Major Irabor noted that the Ondo State Government has commended the Army’s prompt intervention and its commitment to resolving the issue amicably.

“The Nigerian Army, as a reputable organization anchored on discipline, will not shy away from its responsibilities. We remain in touch with the deceased’s family to ensure justice and welfare support,” the statement added.
