BUK Launches 10 Solar-Powered Tricycles to Boost Campus Transportation

In a landmark stride toward sustainable mobility and environmental conservation, Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has commissioned ten solar-powered tricycles to enhance transportation within its campuses. The innovative initiative reflects the institution’s growing commitment to eco-friendly solutions and aligns with Nigeria’s broader agenda for renewable energy adoption.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held on Monday, October 20, 2025, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, described the project as a “landmark achievement” under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Professor Haruna explained that the solar-powered tricycles form part of BUK’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable technologies into its daily operations. He said the initiative will not only improve mobility for students and staff but also help reduce the University’s carbon footprint.

“Today, we are delighted to receive ten solar-powered tricycles that will operate within the University to ease transportation challenges for our students and staff,” the Vice Chancellor stated. “We are also expecting an additional ten soon. With the existing eight petrol-powered tricycles already in operation, a total of twenty-eight tricycles will soon be serving our community.”

He urged members of the University community to make responsible use of the vehicles and embrace the project as a shared innovation aimed at fostering a cleaner, safer, and more efficient campus environment.

The commissioning ceremony attracted principal officers of the University, including the Deputy Vice Chancellors, Professor Aliyu Muazu and Professor Amina Mustapha, the Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, the Bursar, Malam Rabi’u Dauda, and the University Librarian, Dr. Kabiru Dahiru Abbas.

With this initiative, Bayero University continues to position itself as a leading institution in promoting sustainability, renewable energy, and technological innovation within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
