Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Brother, 11 Others Remanded in Kuje Prison Over Protest

The Magistrate Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has ordered the remand of Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu alongside Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and eleven others in Kuje Correctional Centre.

The group was arrested on Monday, October 20, during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, which paralyzed movement and disrupted activities across parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

They were arraigned before the Kuje Magistrate Court on Tuesday on charges bordering on breach of public peace, according to police authorities.

The police explained that the protest contravened an existing court order restricting demonstrations within certain areas of the city. The order reportedly prohibited gatherings or protests near sensitive government locations, including the Aso Rock Villa, National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.

It was further learnt that the restriction stemmed from a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which last week restrained activist Omoyele Sowore and others from organizing protests in the specified areas, pending the determination of a motion on notice.

The arrest and subsequent remand of Emmanuel Kanu, Ejimakor, and the 11 others have sparked fresh debates among human rights advocates over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in federal custody for nearly five years.
