Imo, Abia: Customs Trains Officers, Traders on Excise Register System to Boost Transparency

In a renewed effort to boost efficiency and transparency in excise duty administration, the Imo/Abia Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has begun a two-day on-site training for Resident Officers and Excise Traders on the use of the Excise Register System (ERS).

The capacity-building exercise, which commenced on Thursday, October 16, 2025, was jointly organized by the Department of Excise, Free Trade Zone and Industrial Incentive, and the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The training is designed to equip participants with practical knowledge of the ERS to enhance data management, improve operational efficiency, and promote revenue accountability.

Declaring the session open, the Customs Area Controller of the Imo/Abia Command, Comptroller Blessing Ihenacho, represented by the Deputy Comptroller of Operations, DC Happiness Ekpi-Ebri, emphasized the importance of the training, describing it as a vital step toward achieving greater transparency and efficiency in excise administration.

“The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to leveraging technology to promote transparency and efficiency. Officers must ensure they apply this system effectively to achieve its intended purpose,” she stated.

Speaking on behalf of the visiting team from the headquarters, Assistant Comptroller Aliyu Idris of the Department of Excise, Free Trade Zone and Industrial Incentive, said the training received the approval of the Comptroller-General of Customs to ensure uniform proficiency among officers and traders operating across excise factories nationwide.

He explained that mastering the use of the Excise Register System would not only improve accountability but also streamline excise operations in line with global best practices.

Participants at the training included representatives from major excise factories such as the Nigeria Bottling Company, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Golden Guinea Breweries Plc, Seven-Up Bottling Company Ltd, Afrobeverages & Distillers Ltd, and Henaco Beverages Ltd.

According to the organizers, the ERS training reflects the NCS’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening compliance, curbing revenue leakages, and promoting a more transparent and technology-driven excise administration system across the country.
