Newly confirmed Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has vowed to lead a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) that is “swift in action, precise in strike, and lethal against terrorists,” pledging to outpace insurgents and deny them the time or space to plan attacks.AVM Aneke at the House of SenateAVM Aneke at the House of Senate

Speaking with firm resolve during his confirmation before the National Assembly on Tuesday, Aneke said his vision for the Air Force is anchored on discipline, technology, and intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and protecting national sovereignty.

“We will keep insurgents running—they will have no time to think, plan, or regroup,” the Air Chief declared. “When I say lethal, I mean professionally decisive. A force that acts with precision, purpose, and strategic intelligence.”

Aneke’s confirmation followed his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, empowering the President to appoint Service Chiefs subject to Senate approval. With his confirmation, he officially succeeds Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar and joins the Armed Forces Council alongside other newly confirmed Service Chiefs.

Lawmakers commended Aneke’s operational record, describing him as a “seasoned strategist and airpower professional.” His tenure as Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, was particularly praised for enhancing strategic airlift capability, boosting joint operations, and improving NAF’s responsiveness to emerging threats.

Senators also lauded his leadership in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations key components that have shaped Nigeria’s counter-insurgency and internal security outcomes in recent years.

Beyond his professional credentials, Aneke’s confirmation reinforces the constitutional principle of civilian oversight of the military and highlights the government’s renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and modern defence reforms.

A graduate of the United States Air War College, Montgomery, Alabama, AVM Aneke holds multiple advanced degrees in Strategic Studies, International Affairs, and Political Economy. With over 4,300 flight hours across various aircraft types, he is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most experienced pilots and defence intellectuals.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Dr Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado, were among key dignitaries present at the session.

As he assumes command, Aneke said his leadership would redefine the Nigerian Air Force as a force of “precision, professionalism, and purpose.”

“We will be swift to act, precise to strike, and intelligent in execution,” he assured. “This is an Air Force built not just for power, but for protection, progress, and peace.”
