AVM Aneke Assumes Command as 23rd CAS, Vows to Strengthen Air Power, National Security

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Thursday, October 30, 2025, witnessed a historic change of command as Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke formally assumed office as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff (CAS).

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja, AVM Aneke described his appointment as “a tremendous privilege and a solemn duty,” pledging to lead the Air Force with humility, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The new Air Chief paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, for his “exceptional leadership, professionalism, and courage” in steering the NAF through critical phases of the nation’s fight against terrorism and insecurity. He lauded Abubakar’s legacy of excellence and service, assuring that he would consolidate on the solid foundation already laid.

In his valedictory address, the outgoing Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar, expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve the country, recounting key achievements under his tenure. These include improved operational efficiency, enhanced capacity building, and Nigeria’s recent assumption of the Chairmanship of the Association of African Air Forces.

He commended AVM Aneke as an officer of integrity, dedication, and competence, urging him to sustain the momentum, prioritize personnel welfare, and maintain a combat-ready, people-focused Air Force. The outgoing Air Chief also paid tribute to fallen heroes and appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his colleagues, and family for their unwavering support.

In his acceptance remarks, AVM Aneke expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, reiterating the NAF’s “unflinching loyalty to the President, the Constitution, and the Nigerian people.”

He promised to strengthen inter-service collaboration, enhance force readiness, and reposition the Air Force for greater efficiency in delivering the security architecture vital to Nigeria’s peace and progress. The new Air Chief also acknowledged the support of the Tenth National Assembly, members of the Armed Forces, and his family.

With the leadership transition complete, the Nigerian Air Force enters a new chapter under AVM Aneke’s command—one defined by discipline, innovation, and mission focus—as the Service remains “Willing, Able, and Ready” to defend the nation’s airspace and uphold its pride.
