Tinubu Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Religious Freedom, Dismisses Claims of Intolerance
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to upholding religious freedom and tolerance, emphasizing that the country remains a democracy founded on constitutional guarantees protecting the rights of citizens of all faiths.
In a statement issued from the State House, the President dismissed characterisations of Nigeria as religiously intolerant, insisting that such depictions do not reflect the nation’s true identity or the ongoing efforts of his administration to foster unity and mutual respect among diverse religious communities.
“Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions,” President Tinubu stated.

He noted that religious liberty remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s national ethos and would continue to guide the policies and actions of his government. “The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” the President added.
Tinubu further stressed that the Nigerian constitution guarantees the protection of all citizens regardless of their religious beliefs, reaffirming that his administration does not condone or encourage any form of religious persecution.
Reiterating his government’s readiness to collaborate with global partners, President Tinubu said Nigeria remains committed to working with the United States and the international community to strengthen understanding and cooperation towards the protection of communities of all faiths.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so,” he affirmed.
