MURIC Accuses CAN of Betraying Tinubu, Fueling US ‘Genocide’ Narrative Despite Favorable Christian Appointments

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly criticized the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), accusing the Christian body of allegedly betraying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration despite what MURIC describes as the President’s fair and generous treatment of Christians in federal appointments.

The accusation follows the decision by United States President Donald Trump to reclassify Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged religious persecution of Christians.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Founder and Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, asserted that the U.S. move was unjustified, alleging that some Christian leaders in Nigeria provided misleading information about religious violence to the U.S. government.

“Despite vehement denial of Christian genocide by the Nigerian government, U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday redesignated Nigeria as a country of particular concern,” Akintola stated. “This redesignation is blurred, misplaced and distorted. It is a complete misrepresentation of the true picture on ground in Nigeria.”

MURIC accused certain Christian clerics of writing “frivolous petitions” to the U.S. Congress, alleging that Christians were the sole victims of terrorism in Nigeria. The group claimed that CAN amplified this narrative rather than countering it, thereby damaging the country’s image abroad.

Akintola argued that President Tinubu has been “extraordinarily considerate” to Christians in his appointments and policy decisions.

“CAN’s action is a stab in the back in view of President Tinubu’s preference for Christians in appointments, favours and privileges over his Muslim brethren,” he said.

MURIC claimed that the President himself confirmed that 62 per cent of federal appointments under his administration were given to Christians, while the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, “has been even more generous” toward Christian causes.

“In spite of all that was done for Nigerian Christians by this administration, they still deemed it fit to take Nigeria to the enabler of Gaza genocide,” Akintola added.

Describing the petitions as “the mother of all betrayals,” MURIC urged Nigerian leaders to close ranks and defend the country’s integrity before the international community, noting that some Nigerians were complicit in providing “distorted and sensational accounts” to foreign authorities.
