Lagos Police Declare Sowore Wanted Over Alleged Attempt to Incite Public Disorder

The Lagos State Police Command has declared human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, wanted for allegedly attempting to incite public disturbance following protests against the demolition of houses in the Oworonshoki area of the state.

Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, said Sowore ignored repeated warnings from the police not to mobilize residents for demonstrations over the demolition exercise, which the Lagos State Government said was part of its ongoing urban modernization project.

Sowore, who leads the Take It Back Movement, had reportedly threatened to stage a protest over what he described as “inhumane and insensitive” demolitions that rendered several residents homeless.

Despite the police warning, members of the movement on Monday defied the directive and held a peaceful protest. However, anti-riot police and operatives of the state task force dispersed the protesters using tear gas canisters.

Sowore was said to have been absent during the demonstration.

Speaking to journalists after security operatives cleared the protest scene, CP Jimoh said Sowore was being sought for allegedly planning to cause chaos and obstruct vehicular movement on the Third Mainland Bridge.

“He has put all plans in motion to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge, which amounts to a serious felony. Such an act would have caused unnecessary hardship for motorists and visitors transiting through Lagos,” Jimoh stated.

“We will not allow this to happen. We are closing in on him. Wherever he is, we will get him. We have video evidence showing that he flew in from Abuja but refused to disembark, apparently out of fear,” the Commissioner added.
