Abuja Hosts ICEGOV 2025: Nigeria Pledges Commitment to Digital Governance and Innovation

Abuja has become the focal point of global digital discourse as Nigeria officially launched the 18th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV 2025) on Tuesday. The four-day conference, running from November 4 to 7, is the first of its kind to be hosted in West Africa.

The event, themed “Shaping the Future of Digital Governance through Cooperation, Innovation, and Inclusion,” has gathered senior government officials, global technology leaders, academics, and development partners to co-create solutions for governance in the digital era.

Technology as a Tool for National Transformation

Declaring the event open, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized that digital technologies are not just economic tools but are essential in reshaping society, governance, and citizenship. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to embedding digital transformation at all levels of national development.

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, delivered the keynote address, recalling that Nigeria’s successful bid to host the 2025 edition was inspired by the country’s active participation in the 2024 ICEGOV Conference in South Africa.

“Technology shows that we can do things differently. To reform and transform our country, we must go digital,” Inuwa stated. He noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for public-sector reform and economic diversification through digital transformation.

Digital Literacy and Legislative Action

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, joined other dignitaries to affirm the government’s resolve to integrate digital literacy into school curricula to prepare young Nigerians for the future of work.

DG Inuwa outlined NITDA’s digital literacy framework, which rests on three pillars:

* Integrating digital skills at all levels of formal education.

* Building a digitally skilled public workforce, with over 24,000 civil servants already onboarded.

* Scaling citizens’ digital capabilities through partnerships with organizations such as the NYSC.

In a legislative update, Hon. Adedeji Olajide (Ibadan North West/South West Federal Constituency) announced that the National Assembly will deliberate on a landmark digital innovation bill within two weeks, aimed at positioning Africa for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The conference, supported by the United Nations University and Nile University, is expected to deepen research collaboration and strengthen public service delivery across the continent.
