UN Envoy Hails Military Efforts in North East, Calls for Deeper Security Collaboration

The United Nations Chief Security Adviser for Nigeria, Mr. Senyo Kufe, has commended the Nigerian military for its professionalism and sustained efforts in stabilising the North East, describing the region as the “engine room” of the country’s security operations.

Kufe made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri, as part of his nationwide familiarisation and operational assessment tour.

Speaking at the meeting, the UN official, who assumed office in August 2025, applauded the Nigerian military for its critical role in securing the region and supporting humanitarian operations. He said the collaboration between the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) and the military had been instrumental in protecting aid workers and maintaining safe corridors for humanitarian activities.

“The North East remains central to Nigeria’s security and humanitarian landscape. Our mission here is to further strengthen the bond between the UN and the Theatre Command to ensure the safety of personnel and the success of field operations,” Kufe stated.

He expressed appreciation to the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, for his leadership and continued support to UNDSS operations, particularly in intelligence sharing, physical security, and field coordination.

Similarly, the Area Security Adviser and Field Coordination Officer, North East, Mr. Udit Mehta, praised Operation Hadin Kai for maintaining a stable and cooperative environment for humanitarian actors. He noted that the visit would enhance joint planning and improve emergency response systems across the region.

Responding, Major General Abubakar reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the UN and other international stakeholders. He said the military remains focused on defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace, while also ensuring the safety of humanitarian personnel working in conflict-affected areas.

“The partnership between the Nigerian military and the UN is vital to sustaining stability and protecting civilians. We will continue to engage constructively and provide all necessary support to ensure humanitarian operations succeed,” he said.

Both parties agreed to deepen collaboration in emergency preparedness, information sharing, and security management. The visit also featured the exchange of souvenirs, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.

Kufe was accompanied by UNDSS officials, including Security Analyst Mr. Christian Munteanu and Field Security Associate Major Nuhu Mantana (Rtd). Senior officers of OPHK, including the Deputy Theatre Commander, Air Vice Marshal Essen Efanga, Component Commanders, and Principal Staff Officers, were also in attendance.
