DSS Arraigns 27-Year-Old for Advocating Military Coup on Social Media

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a six-count charge against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, for allegedly advocating a military takeover of the Nigerian government through social media posts.

The charge, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, accuses Onukwume of making several posts on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @theagroman, in October 2025, calling for the removal of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and urging the military to seize power.

According to the DSS, the posts amounted to incitement against the democratic government and were capable of undermining national security and public order. The prosecution stated that Onukwume’s actions contravened Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).

In one of the alleged posts cited in court, Onukwume reportedly wrote:

“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”

Another post allegedly read: “It will happen eventually, Nigerians. The military needs your support now! Only they can save this country. The man in Aso Rock has sold this nation to the West. Only the military can reset Nigeria.”

He was also said to have written:

“Tinubu has to go and APC has to die for Nigeria to have any semblance of normal life. And if you think your votes can remove Tinubu, you’re a fool.”

The DSS maintained that the repeated posts constituted a direct call for the suspension of democratic governance, which poses a serious threat to national stability.

Onukwume, a resident of Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, is expected to be arraigned later this week.

His prosecution comes amid recent public anxiety over reports of an alleged plot by some military personnel to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration — claims the Defence Headquarters has firmly denied, stressing that there was no coup attempt or detention related to such within the Armed Forces.

Meanwhile, civil society groups, senior lawyers, and retired military officers have widely condemned any suggestion of a coup, describing it as a dangerous provocation and a betrayal of Nigeria’s democratic progress.
