FG, Zamfara Governor to NIPR: Lead the Charge for a Rebranded Nigeria

The Federal and Zamfara State Governments have called on the FCT Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to take a frontline role in shaping Nigeria’s image and driving inclusive national development, as the institute marked its 35th anniversary in Abuja.

The charge was made on Thursday at the NIPR FCT Chapter 35th Anniversary Conference with the theme, “Leadership for Inclusive Development and Nation Branding”.

Speaking at the event, Justice Amina Adamu Augie (rtd), who delivered the keynote address, stressed the need for leaders who understand that development must go beyond economic statistics to embrace equity, fairness and social protection.

“Inclusive development goes beyond growth numbers to focus on equity and fairness, access to opportunities, social protection, and participation in decision-making,” she said.

Augie noted that visionary and transformational leadership is essential for uniting citizens behind a shared national purpose. She added that nation branding remains a critical tool for reshaping Nigeria’s global image, attracting investment and showcasing the country’s cultural strengths.

“Nation branding can emphasise diversity, social harmony, cultural richness, and democratic values, and promote a unified national story that resonates globally,” she said. She urged government and citizens to work together, stating that nation branding is a collective responsibility.

She identified Nigeria’s cultural assets such as music, cuisine, fashion, literature and film as tools the country must deliberately deploy in telling a more compelling national story.

Stanley Ogadigbo, Chairman of the NIPR FCT Chapter, described the chapter as a “mini Nigeria” due to its ethnic and cultural diversity. He reaffirmed its commitment to national development and reputation management, saying the chapter has consistently used its annual conference to address issues of national importance.

“We believe that we are because there is a society to build,” Ogadigbo said.

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, who chaired the occasion and was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, praised the FCT Chapter for sustaining professionalism within the PR community.

“It is my sincere hope and expectation that we will remain in this and anew that will continue to shape and sustain public relations across best practices,” he said.

NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, identified insecurity, dwindling hope and a national image crisis as major challenges confronting the country. He expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome them.

“We are the best in the world, wherever we go, we excel, except in Nigeria. That too will change,” Neliaku said.

The Federal Government’s position was delivered by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, who was represented by the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace. He emphasised the central role of PR practitioners in nation-building.

“Public relations practitioners have a vital responsibility in shaping national unity and national progress at this time. Practitioners must continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment to strengthening our unity, promoting national values and advancing national development,” Ndace said.
