NAF Pilots Eject Unhurt After Alpha Jet Suffers Mid-Air Emergency in Kainji

Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet pilots on Saturday escaped unhurt after successfully ejecting from their aircraft when it developed an in-flight emergency shortly after take-off at the NAF Base in Kainji, Niger State.

The incident occurred during a post-inspection functional check flight. According to the Air Force, the aircraft encountered a sudden emergency moments after becoming airborne, prompting the pilots to act swiftly. Demonstrating what officials described as exceptional courage and professionalism, the pilots manoeuvred the jet away from populated areas before ejecting to safety. They were immediately taken for routine medical evaluation.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised the aircrew for their bravery, discipline and quick judgement, noting that their actions helped avert potential casualties.

He also ordered the immediate establishment of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The NAF reassured Nigerians of its commitment to maintaining stringent safety standards and operational excellence. It further reiterated that the safety of its personnel and the protection of citizens remain at the core of its constitutional responsibilities.

The statement was issued by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force.
