Anambra Police Warn Parents, Youths Over Fireworks, Tyre Burning

The Anambra State Police Command has warned parents and youths across the state against the burning of tyres, fireworks and the use of any form of social explosives during the Yuletide season, particularly during crossover night celebrations.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday, reiterating the command’s standing ban on such activities, which he said pose serious risks to public safety and security.

Orutugu explained that the ban was aimed at protecting lives and property, maintaining public order, preventing damage to government infrastructure, and curbing environmental pollution and security breaches that often accompany the burning of tyres and the use of explosive devices.

He cautioned that activities such as the use of fireworks, knockouts, firecrackers and other improvised explosive items would not be tolerated under any guise, stressing that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.

The police commissioner specifically urged parents and guardians to closely monitor and caution their children and wards, noting that many of those involved in such acts during festive periods are youths.

According to him, the command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations across the state to ensure a peaceful and crime-free Yuletide celebration.

He assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place in all parts of the state, including residential areas, worship centres and major roads, to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Orutugu further appealed to Ndi Anambra to celebrate responsibly and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities, adding that the police remained committed to safeguarding lives and property before, during and after the festive season.

The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to enforce the ban strictly and wished residents a peaceful and joyous Yuletide celebration.
