Army to Build More Barracks, Skills Centres for Troops’ Families — COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has announced plans by the Nigerian Army to construct additional barracks accommodation and establish skills acquisition centres to improve the welfare and economic empowerment of troops’ families.

Shaibu disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing officers and soldiers of the 18 Brigade at Latini Barracks, Bida, Niger State, during an operational visit to the formation.

He said the welfare of personnel and their families remains a top priority under his leadership, stressing that improved living conditions and post-service skills development are critical to boosting morale and sustaining operational effectiveness.

The assurance was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, on Wednesday.

According to the Army chief, deliberate efforts are being made to address accommodation shortfalls across formations, while skills acquisition centres will be introduced to empower troops’ spouses and dependants economically.

“The welfare of our personnel is receiving serious and continuous attention. We are committed to improving living conditions through additional accommodation and creating opportunities for skills development for our troops’ families,” Shaibu said.

He commended the officers and soldiers of 18 Brigade for their dedication and resilience in maintaining relative peace within their area of responsibility, noting that their sacrifices are central to national stability.

The COAS charged the troops to remain resolute and sustain offensive operations against bandits and other criminal elements, adding that restoring public confidence in security remains a key objective of the Nigerian Army.

“You must continue to degrade and neutralise threats within your area of responsibility. Your professionalism and commitment are vital to winning the trust of the people and ensuring lasting peace,” he added.

Shaibu assured the troops of the Army Headquarters’ continued support, urging them to maintain discipline, professionalism and loyalty in the discharge of their duties.

The visit forms part of the COAS’s ongoing operational tours aimed at assessing troop welfare, boosting morale and reinforcing the Army’s strategic objectives across formations nationwide.
