Gowon Urges NDC to Prepare Officers for Modern Warfare, Democratic Protection

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), has praised the National Defence College (NDC) for its pivotal role in training dedicated officers for the country’s Armed Forces, while urging the institution to equip officers to protect democracy and counter modern security threats.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by NDC Commandant, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in Abuja, the 91-year-old elder statesman emphasized the military’s critical role as a stabilizing force in Nigeria.

“Protecting Nigeria’s democracy is paramount; it is the premier form of government globally,” Gowon stated, urging the College to continuously refine its curriculum to address 21st-century challenges. He highlighted the importance of incorporating non-conventional warfare, including counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency, into officer training to meet evolving threats.

The former Head of State also stressed that rigorous training is the “bedrock” of any successful military operation. Addressing participants of NDC Course 34, he encouraged them to take full advantage of the program to prepare for future high-command responsibilities. “Security is the panacea for national development; a secured nation thrives in every area of human endeavor,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure and efforts to heal the nation after the Nigerian Civil War, Gowon highlighted initiatives such as the establishment of Federal Unity Schools, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the Nigerian Military School, previously known as the “Boys Company,” as part of his legacy in fostering unity and discipline.

During the visit, Rear Admiral Ahmed congratulated Gowon on his recent 91st birthday and expressed gratitude for his enduring commitment to national security. The Commandant described the visit as part of a familiarization tour following his assumption of command late last year.

“You are an embodiment of knowledge and a primary think-tank, especially regarding security, having steered this country through its most trying periods,” Ahmed said. He noted that guidance from seasoned leaders is vital for repositioning the NDC to achieve optimum performance.

The visit concluded with the presentation of an official souvenir to General Gowon and a group photograph. Senior officials accompanying the Commandant included Major General KO Ukandu, Deputy Commandant/Director of Studies; AVM E. Owai, College Secretary; and Professor AO Ahmed, Provost of the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, among other directors.

The meeting reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to producing officers capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy while effectively responding to contemporary security challenges.
