Kwara 2027: Emir of Ilorin Receives Kale Kawu as Aspirant Seeks Royal Blessing for Governorship Bid
The political landscape ahead of the 2027 Kwara State governorship race is gradually taking shape as Engr. Suleiman Bolakale Kawu Agaka, a retired Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), formally sought the blessings of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, for his gubernatorial ambition.
Kawu, widely known as Kale Kawu, signified his political intent during a visit to the ancient palace of the Emir of Ilorin, underscoring the enduring influence of traditional institutions in the state’s political culture.
A respected traditional titleholder, Kawu holds the prestigious title of Dan Iyan of Ilorin—meaning the head of princes and princesses in the Ilorin Emirate. He is also honoured as Hasken Lafiagi (“Light of the Lafiagi Emirate”), titles conferred in recognition of his philanthropy, leadership, and developmental contributions across communities.
Addressing the Emir and members of the Emirate Council, the technocrat-turned-politician described the palace visit as a deliberate mark of respect and cultural responsibility.
“We came to seek your royal blessing before embarking on this political journey,” Kawu said. “It is important for me to consult the palace first before wider engagements, because of my deep respect for our heritage, our leaders, and the traditional institution.”

Beyond his royal lineage, Kawu is known for his long public service career in the power and rural development sector. During his years at the REA, he was associated with electrification projects that expanded access to underserved communities, a record observers say may form a key pillar of his campaign narrative. He is also regarded in Ilorin and Lafiagi circles for supporting educational, youth, and community initiatives.
In his response, the Emir of Ilorin described Kawu’s aspiration as a legitimate democratic right but urged him—and other political actors—to approach the contest with humility and restraint.
“It is God who gives power and blessings. May He bless you and your ambition,” the Emir prayed. “Whoever is calm will not miss the way. With patience and humility, God can grant you what you desire. I am not against your ambition; may God Almighty bless your aspirations.”
The monarch’s advice centered on peace, patience, and reliance on divine timing, reflecting concerns over rising political tensions as early alignments begin to form ahead of 2027.
The palace visit effectively signals Kawu’s formal entry into the governorship conversation, positioning him as a contender emphasizing tradition, technocratic experience, and grassroots consultation. Political watchers say his approach of securing traditional goodwill before partisan maneuvering is a strategic attempt to build broad legitimacy across the Emirate and beyond.
