APC Convention: 8,453 Delegates Storm Abuja as Party Rejigs Leadership
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that no fewer than 8,453 delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to converge in Abuja for its 8th National Convention scheduled to begin on Friday.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing a World Press Conference organised by the party’s Media and Publicity Committee in Abuja.
He said the convention, slated for March 27 to 28, represents a critical moment for the ruling party as it seeks to consolidate its internal democracy, renew leadership, and set the tone for future political engagements.
According to him, the gathering will serve as a platform for policy discussions, leadership elections, and a formal transition to a new set of party executives.
“This convention will bring together delegates for policy engagement, leadership elections, and decision-making. It is also a moment of consolidation and direction-setting for the next phase of our journey as a party,” he said.
The minister noted that the theme of the convention, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the New Hope Agenda,” reflects the party’s commitment to strengthening internal cohesion while aligning its processes with the broader governance vision of the current administration.

He stressed that the APC, since its formation, has remained focused on national development, democratic values, and inclusive governance, adding that its resilience through electoral cycles and national challenges underscores its maturity as a political institution.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Central Coordinating Committee and former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, said the party’s leadership is determined to set the pace for a durable and reliable democratic culture in Nigeria.
“We are leaders, and as leaders, we must set the pace for a durable and reliable democracy. The APC is ready,” Masari stated.
He assured stakeholders and party members of the readiness of various committees to deliver a hitch-free convention, noting that extensive preparations have been made to ensure seamless coordination of activities.
The high-level briefing was attended by key party stakeholders, including former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dongara and members of the convention committee, as well as senior government officials and presidential aides such as Sunday Dare and Tope Ajayi.
Others are Minister of arts, Culture, tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minster of Aviation and aerospace development, Festus Kyamo; Pius Ayim Vice Chairman of the Central Committee; Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga; and other top party dignitaries.
The APC leadership emphasized that the convention is not merely a routine political gathering but a defining moment aimed at reinforcing party structures, strengthening accountability, and enhancing stakeholder participation.
As delegates begin to arrive in Abuja, party officials expressed confidence that the convention would further solidify the APC’s position as one of Africa’s largest political parties and provide a roadmap for its future political trajectory.
