MacArthur Foundation Launches ‘Nigeria Next’ Initiative to Drive Youth Innovation, Economic Growth
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has unveiled a new strategic initiative, Nigeria Next, aimed at empowering young Nigerians to drive social and economic transformation across the country.
The programme, announced by the Foundation’s Nigeria Director, Kole Shettima, is designed to expand opportunities for youth through digital inclusion, innovation, economic advancement, civic engagement, and supportive public policy frameworks.
In a communication introducing the initiative, Shettima said Nigeria Next reflects the Foundation’s commitment to investing in Nigeria’s youthful population, positioning them as key actors in shaping the nation’s future.
According to him, the initiative seeks to equip young people with digital tools, foster creativity, and strengthen platforms that enable active civic participation. He noted that such investments are critical to unlocking the potential of a demographic that constitutes a significant share of Nigeria’s population.
The strategy document accompanying the launch underscores the central role of youth in national development, particularly as Nigeria continues to grow demographically and economically. The Foundation expressed confidence that, with the right support systems, young Nigerians can lead innovation and influence policies that promote inclusive and sustainable growth.

The initiative builds on years of engagement and collaboration across the Foundation’s programmes in governance, technology, and media. These consultations, involving stakeholders from cities including Abuja, Kano, Lagos, Enugu, and Maiduguri, helped identify key challenges and opportunities facing young people nationwide.
Shettima emphasised that the programme adopts a participatory approach, viewing youth not merely as beneficiaries but as active contributors to national progress. He observed that many young Nigerians—especially those with access to digital platforms—are already reshaping civic discourse and driving innovation across sectors such as technology, the creative economy, and social advocacy.
Highlighting practical examples, he referenced the experience of a young content creator from Bauchi whose involvement in online civic movements illustrates both the challenges and transformative potential of Nigeria’s youth.
While the initiative is still in its early stages, the Foundation expressed optimism about its long-term impact. Shettima said the overarching goal is to build a “prosperous and creative Nigeria” where young people are at the forefront of innovation and socio-economic change, supported by evidence-based government policies.
The launch comes amid increasing recognition of the strategic role of youth in Nigeria’s development, particularly in the digital space, where their voices continue to shape public discourse and influence national conversations.
