Army, DSS , Vigilantes Eliminate Scores of Bandits in Niger
Troops of the Nigerian Army, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and local volunteer forces on Tuesday thwarted a planned large-scale bandit attack on Bagna and Erena communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, neutralising several of the assailants.

According to the sources, a large group of armed bandits—estimated at over 300 and travelling on motorcycles—had advanced toward the targeted communities when they were intercepted by a joint force comprising security operatives and local vigilantes. The attackers were ambushed before reaching their targets, resulting in heavy casualties among the group, while others fled toward the Makuba and Allawa axis.
Residents of Bagna and Erena communities commended the swift response and coordination of the security forces, noting that the intervention averted what could have been a devastating attack.
“We are very grateful. The joint security forces saved our communities from a major disaster,” a resident said.
Security sources further highlighted the growing synergy between formal security agencies and local volunteer groups, describing it as a critical factor in strengthening community-level defence and closing existing security gaps.
They noted that such collaboration has significantly enhanced rapid response capabilities and contributed to improved security outcomes in several parts of the country.
