Nigeria, U.S. Launch Defence Working Groups to Deepen Security Cooperation
Nigeria and the United States have formally inaugurated Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) in Abuja, marking a significant step under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap aimed at strengthening bilateral security collaboration.
The initiative is designed to enhance joint efforts in addressing terrorism, insecurity, and broader regional instability, with a focus on building institutional capacity and improving operational effectiveness.
Speaking at the inauguration, the head of the U.S. delegation, Mr. Cate Dave, stated that the working groups would drive strategic planning to reinforce defence institutions and deny terrorist groups safe havens. He underscored the critical relationship between strong institutions and successful counterterrorism operations.

On the Nigerian side, the delegation leader, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the partnership as vital in confronting evolving security challenges within Nigeria and across the region. He noted that the collaboration would prioritise strengthening the warfighting capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria while improving responsiveness to emerging threats.
Edosa added that the ultimate objective is to restore lasting peace and stability nationwide.
Both delegations emphasised the importance of delivering measurable outcomes, maintaining accountability, and ensuring sustained cooperation as key pillars for enhancing security and promoting regional stability.
The inauguration signals a renewed commitment by both countries to deepen defence ties and coordinate more effectively in tackling shared security concerns.
