Tinubu Extends Customs Boss Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months to Consolidate Reforms
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to continue leading critical reforms aimed at modernising the nation’s customs administration and trade facilitation framework.
The extension, which takes effect from August 1, 2026, when his current tenure was due to expire, will run until February 2027.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension is intended to enable Adeniyi consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window Project, a flagship trade facilitation initiative designed to streamline cargo clearance, reduce port bottlenecks, improve revenue collection, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.
The Presidency also noted that the additional period would ensure a smooth leadership transition within the Nigeria Customs Service and allow the Comptroller-General to complete ongoing personnel and institutional reforms.
During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and ensure the retirement of officers who have attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.
Transformational Leadership
Since his appointment by President Tinubu in June 2023, Adeniyi has been widely credited with driving one of the most ambitious reform agendas in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Under his leadership, the Service recorded unprecedented revenue growth, consistently surpassing annual collection targets and contributing significantly to government efforts to improve non-oil revenue generation.
His administration also intensified anti-smuggling operations, leading to major seizures of illicit goods, arms, ammunition, narcotics, and other contraband while strengthening border security and economic protection.

Adeniyi championed the deployment of modern technology and digital customs processes, accelerating the migration from manual procedures to automated systems aimed at reducing human contact, improving transparency, and enhancing operational efficiency.
One of his landmark achievements has been the advancement of the National Single Window initiative, which seeks to integrate all trade-related government agencies into a unified digital platform for faster and more efficient cargo processing.
Industry stakeholders have described the initiative as a game changer capable of reducing the cost of doing business, improving Nigeria’s ranking in global trade indices, and attracting greater investment into the economy.
International Recognition
Beyond domestic reforms, Adeniyi has elevated Nigeria’s profile in global customs administration.
In 2024, he was elected Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council, becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the prestigious position in the history of the 73-year-old international body.
The development was widely celebrated as recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs governance and Adeniyi’s reputation as a reform-minded administrator.
A seasoned public relations and customs professional, Adeniyi is also credited with improving stakeholder engagement, strengthening relations with the business community, and promoting transparency through regular public communication and consultations.
Career Progression
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.
He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before his appointment as Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.
Over the course of his career, he served in several strategic operational and administrative positions and earned recognition for his expertise in customs administration, public communication, trade facilitation, and institutional reform.
With the latest extension, stakeholders expect Adeniyi to focus on completing key reform initiatives, strengthening succession planning, and consolidating the gains recorded under his leadership as the Nigeria Customs Service continues its transformation into a technology-driven and globally competitive institution.
