FUBK Promotes Five Lecturers to Associate Professors, Dismisses Former ICT Director for Misconduct

The Governing Council of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) has approved the promotion of five academic staff to the rank of Associate Professor (Reader), while also dismissing a former Acting Director of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Directorate over allegations of gross misconduct and negligence.

The decisions were reached at the Council’s 32nd meeting held on Tuesday, June 23, following the consideration of recommendations from External Assessors and the University’s Senior Staff Appointments and Promotions Committee (SSAPC).

The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi by the University’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Jamilu M. Magaji.

According to the statement, the newly promoted academics were drawn from the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences in recognition of their outstanding contributions to teaching, research and community service.

Among those elevated to the rank of Associate Professor is Dr. Aliyu Hamza Balarabe, a renowned Ophthalmologist and the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.

Others promoted are Dr. Ibrahim Abdulkadir (Haematology), Dr. Ashiru Ladan Argungu (Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Dr. Monsidu Kehinde Fasasi (Ophthalmology), and Dr. Garba Umar Kangiwa (Ophthalmology).

The Council noted that the promotions reflected the university’s commitment to rewarding academic excellence and strengthening its capacity for quality teaching, research and healthcare delivery.

In a separate decision, the Council approved the dismissal of Isah Yusuf Tsafe, former Acting Director of the ICT Directorate, after finding him culpable of gross misconduct, negligence and failure to account for university assets entrusted to his care.

According to Magaji, the decision followed recommendations by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC), which investigated allegations surrounding the disappearance of several ICT assets while they were under Tsafe’s supervision.

“The Council also directed the university management to recover or surcharge the value of all outstanding university property linked to the case,” the statement said.

In another disciplinary action, the Council approved the demotion of Mr. Abdullahi Mohammed Adamu, an officer in the ICT Department, by one grade level and barred him from promotion for a period of five years.

The SSDC found that Adamu engaged in unauthorised financial dealings with parents of admission seekers and involved himself in admission-related activities despite not being a member of the University’s Admissions Unit.

The Council described the conduct as a serious breach of university regulations and ethical standards.

Reaffirming its commitment to institutional integrity, accountability and transparency, the Governing Council stressed that misconduct would attract appropriate sanctions regardless of the status or position of those involved.

The Council also reiterated its resolve to uphold merit, discipline and professionalism in the administration of the university while ensuring that academic excellence and responsible conduct remain the hallmarks of the institution.
