
Kanwan Katsina Honoured for Advancing Nutrition Campaigns in Katsina
The Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, mni, has been honoured by the Nutritional Society of Nigeria (NSN), Katsina State Chapter, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the promotion of nutrition programmes and advocacy across Katsina State.
The award was presented by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, during the opening ceremony of the Society’s two-day annual workshop held in Katsina.
According to a statement issued by the Kanwan Katsina’s Media Aide, Jamilu Hashimu Gora, the traditional ruler received the honour for his sustained support for nutrition initiatives in Ketare District and his commitment to improving the health and well-being of communities across the state.
Speaking at the event, Governor Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector through strategic investments in infrastructure and human resources.
He said the state government had renovated and upgraded hospitals and primary healthcare centres, recruited qualified healthcare personnel, and procured modern medical equipment to improve access to quality healthcare services.

The governor also announced the establishment of a committee to oversee the Nutrition Centre at Kofar Sauri as part of efforts to tackle child malnutrition and improve nutritional outcomes across the state.
Responding to the honour, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara expressed appreciation to the Nutritional Society of Nigeria for recognising his modest contributions and pledged his continued support for programmes aimed at promoting healthy living.
He urged the Society to intensify public enlightenment campaigns on the importance of proper nutrition and healthy dietary practices, stressing that increased awareness remains critical to preventing nutrition-related diseases and improving healthcare outcomes.
The traditional ruler advocated wider use of radio and television programmes, social media platforms, live streaming, flyers, banners and other communication channels to educate the public on the benefits of balanced nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
Earlier, renowned nutrition expert, Professor Matazu, mni, delivered a keynote presentation highlighting the critical role of nutrition in disease prevention, healthcare delivery and national development.
The workshop attracted key stakeholders in the health and nutrition sector, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Malam Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir; the Commissioner for Health, Musa Adamu Funtua; the General Manager of the Hospitals Services Management Board, Dr. Nazir Kurfi; the Vice-Chairman of the Northern States Chapter of the Nutritional Society of Nigeria, as well as nutrition professionals, healthcare experts and development partners.
