Chief Judge Releases 207 Prison Inmates in Delta

The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshal Umokoro yesterday concluded his routine visit to prisons in Delta State. He reviewed over Two thousand, six hundred and twenty five (2625) cases of Awaiting Trial Persons and out of the figure, 207 inmates were released unconditionally on the grounds of having over stayed their expected jail term if convicted.18 were released on bail to continue their trials.

The release according to the CJ was in exercise of his functions to visit the prisons in order to review proceedings and trial of inmates to help decongest the prison’s He also decried the influx of young persons in prisons which said could be attributed to the decadence of moral upbringing.

The exercise was conducted across the various Prisons in the state and was witness by top judicial officers, the controller of Prisons and his team, officials of the directorate of public prosecution, lawyers, prosecutors, the police and officials of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Responding, the Controller of Prisons Delta State Command, Sam l lyakoregha thanked the Chief Judge for the timely visit as the visit will help reduce agitation and restiveness among the inmates during this Easter period. He also solicits for more support from the State government as 99% of inmates in custody are from the State.

The Prison Officers Wives Association (PROWA ), paid the fine of an inmate to mark the official commissioning of Crèche/Pre Nursery in Prison Staff School, Port Harcourt.

The National chapter led by its president, Hajia Gwamma Ja’afaru visited the Elele Prison farm Center, Ahoada and Port Harcourt Prisons as part of her state tour of Prowa formations and to inspect the investments of the service as managed by the PROWA along side commissioning of the Crèche/Pre Nursery section of the prison staff school.

The president who is also the wife of the Controller General of Prisons, Ahmed Ja’afaru, spoke through her representative, Mrs Adebimpe Ojo, PROWA Financial Secretary, that the school is opened to cushion the effects of personnels resumption to work after child delivery which will be at a subsidiced rate from the general public.

The Controller of prisons, Rivers State, Mr Timothy Olumide Tinuoye expressed gratitude to the group for coming to show care to the staff and inmate in line with their motto ” we care too”, and requested for regular visits for Rivers State chapter to be carried along. He encouraged staff to always allow their wives to attend meetings in other to benefit from PROWA’s good gestures.

The chairperson, Rivers State chapter Mrs Folasade Tinuoye, wife of the Controller of Prisons, Rivers State Command, urged members of PROWA to justify the gesture by paying up their wards school fees and dues on time.

Other members in the entourage are Mrs Mary Gopep, PROWA Treasurer and Mr David Olufemi Shonowo, SA to National PROWA President.
