Troops Bust Kidnap Syndicate, Recover Ransom Cash, Vehicle in Imo
Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have dismantled a suspected kidnapping syndicate in Imo State, arresting one suspect while recovering part of the ransom paid by a victim and a vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
The intelligence-led operation was conducted on July 17, 2026, in Obinwanne Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area of the state, following credible intelligence on the activities of the criminal network.
Military authorities said troops launched a coordinated cordon and search operation in the area, during which they recovered a bag allegedly used to transport ransom payments. The bag was found abandoned in a nearby bush, suggesting that members of the syndicate had already shared the ransom proceeds.

Further exploitation of intelligence led security operatives to a residential building where one suspect was arrested. A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of a black Lexus saloon car believed to have been used during the kidnapping operation, several mobile phones, identity documents, and ₦298,200 in cash suspected to be part of the ransom collected from the victim.
According to the military, the rescued victim positively identified the arrested suspect as one of those involved in the abduction.
Preliminary investigations also indicated that the suspect played a key role in facilitating the crime by providing his vehicle to the syndicate’s principal actor and receiving a share of the ransom after the victim’s release.
The Nigerian Army disclosed that the suspect and all recovered exhibits have been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and efforts to apprehend other members of the gang, including the alleged kingpin who remains at large.
The Army said the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven security operations and the growing synergy among security agencies in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across the South-East.
