Military Foils Terrorist Attack on Zamfara Base, Rescues 9 Abductees, Loses Officer
Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted terrorist infiltration of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers and rescuing nine abducted civilians.
The attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, when the terrorists attempted to breach the military facility under the cover of darkness.
According to the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army and Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, troops detected the hostile movement and responded with coordinated firepower, forcing the attackers to abandon their assault and retreat in disarray.
Following the initial engagement, reinforcements were deployed as troops launched a hot pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted residents from surrounding communities during the attack.
The sustained pursuit resulted in the rescue of nine abducted civilians, who were subsequently recovered safely by the troops.
However, the military suffered casualties during the fierce firefight, with one Army officer and one police officer killed in action.

Two other soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were immediately evacuated by air for advanced medical treatment. They are reportedly in stable condition.
Troops have since secured the area and intensified exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ casualties and further assess the security situation in the affected communities.
The Nigerian Army also clarified reports circulating on social media that six security personnel were killed during the attack, describing the claim as inaccurate.
According to the Army, the confirmed security casualties were one Army officer and one police officer, while two soldiers sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention.
The successful defence of FOB Kasuwan Daji represents another setback for terrorist elements operating in the North-West, coming amid intensified military operations against armed groups across the theatre.
The Army said the outcome further demonstrates the readiness and resilience of troops in countering attempts by terrorists to attack military positions and terrorise vulnerable communities.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Army added, remains committed to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist networks, protecting civilians and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-West.
