Police Honour 10 Fallen SIS Officers Killed in Kebbi Bandit Operation
The Nigeria Police Force has held a memorial service in honour of 10 officers of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who were killed in an encounter with suspected bandits in Kebbi State.
The memorial service, held on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, brought together senior police officers, colleagues and families of the deceased to pay tribute to the fallen personnel.
The officers lost their lives on August 10 during an encounter with a heavily armed group of suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
According to the Force, the officers were part of a team deployed to confront the armed group, which was reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
The Police said the encounter inflicted significant losses on the attackers, while the SIS personnel fought with courage and determination in defence of lives, property and national security.
Speaking at the memorial, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the deceased officers as gallant personnel who paid the supreme price in the service of the nation.
Disu expressed the condolences of the Nigeria Police Force to the bereaved families and assured them of the Force’s continued support, stressing that the sacrifices of their loved ones would not be forgotten.

The IGP also vowed that the Police would not be intimidated or relent in the ongoing fight against banditry, terrorism and other forms of violent criminality.
He said the Force would continue efforts to identify, pursue and bring to justice those responsible for attacks on police personnel and innocent citizens.
Also speaking, the Commander of the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, disclosed that subsequent operational assessments showed that the casualties inflicted on the attackers were significantly higher than the initial assessment.
Shogunle urged SIS personnel not to allow the loss of their colleagues to undermine their morale, but to remain committed to the fight with the same courage and determination demonstrated by the fallen officers.
Representing the bereaved families, Grace Bala Buba, daughter of one of the deceased officers, thanked the Nigeria Police Force for honouring the fallen personnel and supporting their families.
The memorial service featured prayers and tributes in honour of the deceased officers.
The IGP urged serving police personnel to remember their fallen colleagues with pride and gratitude, saying their sacrifice should inspire renewed determination in the fight against violent crime.
He further reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to sustaining operations against banditry, terrorism and other forms of violent criminality, while strengthening collaboration with relevant stakeholders to protect lives and property.
The IGP maintained that the Police would pursue those responsible for attacks on its personnel and innocent citizens and ensure that the sacrifices of the fallen officers were not in vain.
