NOUN Bursar Shot Dead in Zamfara
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The university, in a statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, said Marafa died on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
The statement, titled “Official Notice of the Passing of the University Bursar,” said the Vice-Chancellor announced the death on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff and students of the institution.
According to the university, information available to the management indicated that the bursar was shot while returning from Gusau.

Marafa was described as a dedicated and committed staff member who served the university meritoriously and held several positions of responsibility during his career.
He was appointed Bursar of NOUN in September 2022 and reportedly served in the position with a strong commitment to the advancement of the institution.
The university described his death as a profound loss to the NOUN community, mourning him as a “distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member” of the university.
NOUN expressed condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by his death, while praying for strength for them to bear the loss.
The university said details of his burial arrangements would be communicated after they are released by the family.
It also prayed that Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
