Prof Gwarzo Appointed Chancellor of Hausa Community in Europe
Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo has been appointed Chancellor of the Hausa Community in Europe in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of the Hausa language, culture and the welfare of Hausa communities across the continent.
The appointment was announced by the Emir of the Hausa Community in Europe, Alhaji Surajo Jankado, during the 2026 International Hausa Day celebration held in Paris, France.
Jankado described Gwarzo’s appointment as a significant step towards strengthening the unity, cultural identity and development of the Hausa community in Europe.
In his acceptance speech, Gwarzo thanked the leadership of the community for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to work with relevant stakeholders to promote the Hausa language, culture, identity and unity among Hausa people living in Europe.
He said the new responsibility would provide an opportunity to support initiatives aimed at preserving Hausa heritage and ensuring that younger generations in the diaspora remain connected to their language, culture, values and traditions.

Gwarzo also called for stronger collaboration among Hausa communities across European countries, stressing the importance of unity, education and cultural preservation in sustaining the identity of the Hausa people.
The International Hausa Day celebration attracted members of the Hausa community, traditional rulers, academics, cultural advocates and other stakeholders who gathered to celebrate the language, culture and heritage of the Hausa people.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was represented at the event by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described Gwarzo’s appointment as a deserving recognition of his contributions to community development both in Europe and Nigeria.
“Prof Gwarzo deserves such recognition at the international stage due to his unwavering support in promoting Hausa language and culture over the years,” the governor said.
Yusuf congratulated Gwarzo and other personalities honoured during the event, including the Minister of Education, Prof Suwaiba Ahmed; Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Dr Hajjo Sani; and Alaja Mufeedah Folashade Bola Tinubu (Iyaloja), who were also turbaned during the 2026 International Hausa Day celebration in Paris.
