Shettima Commissions 11.2km Roads, Launches 230 Mass Transit Vehicles in Katsina
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has commissioned 11.2 kilometres of major road projects and launched 230 mass transit vehicles as part of the Katsina State Government’s drive to modernise urban infrastructure and public transportation.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, disclosed the details of the inauguration in a statement.
The projects were inaugurated during the Vice-President’s one-day official visit to Katsina State.
The commissioned roads comprise the dualised 4.8-kilometre Kofar Sauri–Central Mosque Roundabout Road, the dualised 2.4-kilometre Central Police Station Junction–Kofar Kaura Underpass Road and the newly constructed four-kilometre Filin Polo–Ring Road.
Shettima also launched 30 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) hybrid buses and 200 Phase I electric tricycles at the Old Ministry of Works as part of the state government’s plan to provide cleaner, more efficient and accessible public transportation.
Speaking at the event, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the commissioning as another milestone in his administration’s infrastructure development, urban renewal and transportation modernisation programme.
Radda said the projects were designed to improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion, enhance road safety and facilitate the movement of people and goods.
“Our administration recognises that an efficient road network is fundamental to economic growth, urban development and social progress,” the governor said.
“Accordingly, we have continued to invest in strategic road infrastructure designed to improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion, enhance road safety and facilitate the movement of people and goods.”
According to him, the three roads form part of a broader network intended to improve traffic circulation, reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity across Katsina metropolis.
He recalled that the Central Mosque Roundabout–Water Board Roundabout Road was commissioned in October 2025, while the Eastern Bypass Road was inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2025.
Radda said the projects were among 12 major urban renewal roads being implemented within Katsina metropolis, explaining that the administration was prioritising an integrated road network rather than isolated projects.
“Our development philosophy is to establish an integrated and interconnected road network rather than undertake isolated projects,” he said.
“This approach ensures that individual roads complement one another and collectively improve accessibility across the metropolis.”
The governor said a similar approach was being extended to Daura and Funtua to spread urban renewal and infrastructure development across the state’s three senatorial districts.
He disclosed that more than 240 kilometres of urban and rural roads had been covered under ongoing infrastructure interventions across Katsina State.

According to him, the projects are intended to connect communities to markets, schools and healthcare facilities while supporting agriculture, commerce and private-sector investment.
CNG Buses, Electric Tricycles Target Cheaper Mobility
On public transportation, Radda said the newly introduced fleet incorporates electric, diesel and CNG technologies and would operate in Katsina, Daura and Funtua.
Students, workers, traders and other residents who depend on affordable and reliable transportation for their daily activities would be among the targeted beneficiaries, he said.
The governor disclosed that three supporting facilities had been established, comprising a main terminal and workshop in Katsina and mini-terminal stations in Daura and Funtua.
He added that 40 modern bus stops were being provided across the three selected local government areas, with facilities including Wi-Fi and solar inverter systems.
Radda said the state was adopting a comprehensive approach to public transportation that goes beyond purchasing vehicles to include terminals, maintenance facilities, passenger infrastructure and sustainable operating arrangements.
The governor also announced the first phase of 200 electric tricycles under a broader programme to deploy 500 electric tricycles across the state.
He said the initiative was expected to promote cleaner mobility while opening opportunities for transport operators, young people, technicians and businesses involved in the emerging electric mobility sector.
“The introduction of electric tricycles will also create opportunities for the development of charging infrastructure, vehicle maintenance services, technical training and other supporting enterprises,” Radda said.
Describing the strategy as “From Energy Transition to Economic Transformation,” the governor said the objective was to build a transportation ecosystem capable of improving mobility while supporting jobs and businesses.
“By progressively integrating electric mobility, CNG technology and conventional transport infrastructure, Katsina State is taking practical steps towards a more diversified, efficient and modern public transportation system,” he added.
Radda pledged that his administration would prioritise sustainability, accountability, maintenance and effective management of the infrastructure and transportation projects.
He thanked President Tinubu and the Federal Government for supporting infrastructure and economic development in the state, while also commending Shettima for honouring the invitation to inaugurate the projects.
The governor further acknowledged the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport, other ministries and agencies, contractors, consultants, members of the State Executive Council and Legislature, as well as residents affected during the construction works.
The event was attended by Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Nasir Yahaya Daura; Senators Muntari Dandutse and Abdulaziz Yar’Adua; Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, Aisha Rimi; Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; former governors, members of the State Executive Council and other dignitaries.
