ICPC, China’s Xinhua Explore Media Partnership to Strengthen Anti-Corruption Fight
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and China’s state-owned Xinhua News Agency are exploring a strategic media partnership aimed at strengthening information exchange and promoting international cooperation in the fight against corruption.
The proposed collaboration was discussed when a delegation of Xinhua media professionals, led by the agency’s Deputy President for Africa, Gui Tao, visited the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, where they met with the commission’s chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the ICPC’s Head of Media and Public Communications, J. Okor Odey, the discussions focused on news sharing, information exchange and opportunities to improve the global visibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives.
Speaking during the meeting, Gui Tao emphasised the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in strengthening international cooperation. He expressed Xinhua’s readiness to collaborate with the ICPC in projecting the commission’s anti-corruption activities to a global audience.
He noted that corruption was a transnational challenge requiring cross-border cooperation, including collaboration among media organisations to promote public awareness and accountability.

In his remarks, Aliyu described the proposed partnership as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and support efforts to combat corruption, particularly illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime.
The ICPC chairman also highlighted the role of the media in shaping public perception, raising awareness and mobilising citizens to support the fight against corruption.
Aliyu urged Xinhua to assist the commission in strengthening its media and public communication capacity through technology transfer and professional training for staff of its Media and Public Communication Unit.
He said such support would improve the commission’s news dissemination capabilities and enhance the international reach of its anti-corruption activities.
Responding, Gui Tao reaffirmed Xinhua’s readiness to provide technical assistance and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel. He added that the agency’s global media platform could help showcase Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms and achievements to international audiences.
According to him, the proposed partnership would be mutually beneficial and anchored on shared commitments to integrity and public accountability.
Xinhua operates an extensive international news network, including a presence across Africa, where it covers developments in economic growth, trade, culture and social affairs while engaging with local media organisations.
The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen media cooperation between Nigeria and China, expand international awareness of the ICPC’s activities and support broader efforts to promote transparency, good governance and the rule of law.
