INEC Probes Suspected AI-Generated Photos in Voters’ Register
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it is reviewing suspicious photographs, including those suspected to be AI-generated, found in the Preliminary Register of Voters published on its website.
The commission said the online register, released on October 26, 2026, was the same preliminary register physically displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, INEC said some questionable registration records had been identified and flagged for further examination during the physical display, prompting a review and corrective process in line with established procedures.
The commission clarified that the online publication contained the original preliminary register and did not incorporate all ongoing data-cleanup activities.

It stressed that the preliminary register was not the final certified Register of Voters, explaining that the display exercise was designed to enable citizens and stakeholders to scrutinise the records, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and facilitate necessary corrections before certification.
INEC also disclosed that it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses that may have contributed to their appearance in the register.
According to the commission, appropriate action would be taken based on verified findings, while further updates would be provided as the review progresses.
The commission commended citizens and stakeholders who raised concerns over the photographs, noting that public scrutiny was essential to improving the accuracy and integrity of the voters’ register.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to completing the necessary verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), on October 27, 2026.
