Army Expands from 8 to 12 Divisions as 83 Division Prepares for Take-Off
The Nigerian Army is expanding its force structure from eight to 12 divisions as part of efforts to strengthen operational capabilities and improve responses to emerging security threats across the country.
A major step in the expansion is the planned operationalisation of the newly established 83 Division, with its headquarters in Benin City, Edo State.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, gave the assurance on Thursday, during a courtesy visit to Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House, Benin City.
Shaibu said the expansion was aimed at strengthening military presence, improving command and control, and enhancing the Army’s capacity to respond rapidly to security threats, particularly in Edo State and the wider South-South region.
He explained that the 83 Division would soon become operational, describing its establishment as part of the Army’s broader effort to build a more responsive and operationally effective force.

The development represents an important phase in the Army’s restructuring, as additional divisions are expected to provide greater operational coverage and strengthen its ability to address security challenges across different parts of the country.
During the visit, the COAS also assessed operational activities at Headquarters 4 Brigade and commissioned key Army projects, including the Affordable Home Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS) and Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives.
The projects are designed to improve the welfare of military personnel and strengthen relationships between the Army and communities hosting its formations.
Governor Okpebholo commended the Nigerian Army for its contributions to peace and security in Edo State, assuring the COAS of his administration’s continued support and collaboration.
The operationalisation of 83 Division is expected to strengthen the Army’s presence in the South-South, although the effectiveness of the wider expansion will depend on the deployment of personnel, equipment, logistics and supporting infrastructure.
