Justice Dije Aboki of Kano State High Court, Kano on Thursday, June 11, 2015 convicted and sentenced one Michael Onu, (a.k.a. Abdulsalam Yaro Musa), to eight months imprisonment for obtaining money by false pretence.
The convict, using different names, had approached one Hajia Zainab to invest in the purchase of a solar material. The unsuspecting victim, at different time, paid various sums money into bank accounts supplied by the convict, yet no solar material was delivered to her..
In her ruling, Justice Aboki sentenced the accused to four months imprisonment and ordered him to pay a sum of N100, 000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) as restitution to the victim, or risk a further four months in prison.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Aliyu Lawal Saulawa before Justice Lawal Wada Mahmud of Kano State High Court, Kano, on one-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust.
The accused is alleged to have collected the sum of N3, 883, 200.00(Three Million, Eight Hundred and Eighty-Three Thousand, Two Hundred Naira) from one Alhaji Lawal Abubakar, for the purchase of two trailer-load of fertilizer.
However, the suspect reneged on his promise to supply the fertilizer and did not refund the money collected from the victim.
The offence is contrary to Section 311 of the Penal Code Cap.89 Laws of Northern Nigeria 1963 and punishable under Section 312 of the same law.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Justice Wada also adjourned the case to September 15, 2015 and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody.
