Senate Committed To Healthy Banking System – Lawan

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has reiterated the commitment of the Senate to ensure that the nation’s banking system and other financial institutions remain secure, sound and healthy.

Lawan made the commitment when the management team of the National Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) led by its Managing Director, Umar Ibrahim paid him a courtesy visit today in Abuja.

A statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa quoted him saying, “we cannot have a stable economy and even country without a healthy banking system, therefore, it is our duty to ensure that our banking system are reliable.

“We in the Senate will continue to work closely with you. Our relevant committees will partner with you to ensure that citizens are not short-changed. We have the responsibility to make sure that this economy reclaim its lost glory.”

Lawan decried the inability of peasant farmers to access bank facilities that would propel them to produce more, saying that the situation has become a hindrance to sustainable food security for the nation.

“The situation is a challenge to the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to make agricultural sector the main stay of our economy, and something must be done to address the situation for the benefit of the nation,” he said.

Lawan gave assurance of early passage of NDIC Amendment Bill and other legislations related to the banking sector which could not be passed by the last National Assembly.

Earlier, Ibrahim expressed the readiness of the NDIC to work closely with the Senate to address challenges facing the banking sector and devise means of improving its standard.
