WOTCOSA: Kano to Recruit 7,000 Teachers, Build 125 Girl Schools

Kano to Recruit 7,000 Teachers, Build 125 Girl Secondary Schools

Kano state government has unveiled plan to recruit about 7,000 primary and secondary school teachers to enable it perfect its recently introduced free and compulsory education policy, the state’s Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Sunusi Sa’id Kiru has said.

He stated in Kano during the 73rd anniversary reunion of Women Teachers College Old Students Association (WOTCOSA) held on Saturday.

Kiru also revealed that the state is planning to build 100 junior and 25 girl’s senior secondary schools, in addition to the already established Government Science and Technical School in Dawakin TofaLocal Government.

The commissioner who represented the state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje at the event also said the state is now providing free uniforms, textbooks and instructional materials in schools across the state, adding that they have also increased the number of school buses that shuttle girl students in the state.

The ceremony which focused on the importance of girl child education, had thousands of alumni of the school who converged to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of their alma mater, notable among whom were the first ladies of Kano and Jigawa states, Hajiya Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje and Hajiya Asma’u Badaru Abubakar and wife of the emir of Dutse in Jigawa state, Hajiya Gaje Nuhu Sunusi.

Earlier speaking, WOTCOSA president Professor Fatima Muhammad Umar said the school, established in 1947 has been able to meet the increasing demand of more women teachers in the state.

She further emphasized the importance of girl child education, which according to her plays vital role in ensuring a peaceful society, reducing maternity rate and ensuring healthy environment among others.

The president added that educated women actively contribute in making sure that societies prosper at family, school or institutional level.

Professor Umar finally thanked all the old classes of the school for their continuous support particularly in executing notable projects in the school such as drilling new boreholes and repairing existing ones, renovating the school kitchen and the school gate, providing furniture in the school among many others.

Similarly, Professor Aliyu Dauda, the guest lecturer at the occasion, said girl child education is very crucial in educational, political, economic as well as social development of every society.

The university don in his paper titled “Girl Child Education: Some Fundamental Examples” noted education, particularly of girl children is the starting point of everlasting human development.

The reunion also awarded Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and his wife, first lady of Jigawa state, Kano state Commissioner of Education, Sunusi Kiru and the Executive Secretary of Kano State Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSMB), Dr. Bello Shehu for their various efforts in developing the school.

Other notable personalities at the event were Kano state Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Zahra’u Muhammad Umar, Sarkin Fadan Kano and District Head of Tarauni, Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Kurawa and thousands of other alumni of the school from Kano and other states.
