COVID-19: Updated, Delta State Releases 299 Prison Inmates So far

COVID 19: Delta Grants Amnesty to Additional  149 Prison Inmates (June 10, 2020)

As efforts to decongest and further curb the spread of Covid 19 in Delta State,the Chief Judge, Honourable Marshall Umokoro visited Warri Custodial Center on 8th and 9th of June,2020. He reviewed 786 cases, released 149 Awaiting trial inmates and remarkably paid fine for 6 inmates.

The Chief Judge who arrived at exactly 10:21am inspected the facility and commended the Correctional officials for observing basic hygiene and well kept environment.

The officer in-charge, DCC Solomon Arihidioun during his address pled with the Executive Governor of the State Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa to help decongest the Condemned Convict cells, while, the Controller of Corrections Delta State Command Ovie Friday Esezobor on behalf of the Controller General of Corrections, Alhaji Ja’afaru Ahmed appreciated the Chief Judge for his kind gesture and urged the beneficiaries to be of good character and law abiding citizens.

COVID-19: 150 INMATES IN NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICE DELTA STATE COMMAND, REGAIN FREEDOM (Dated April 23, 2020)

Owing to the need to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and further decongest our Custodial centres in Delta State, a total of 150 inmates have been released by the Chief Judge, from the Custodial centres in the State.

The Chief Judge of the State, Marshal Umokoro pointed that the categories of inmates eligible for the amnesty exercise include convicts who are 60yrs of age and above, those with health issues likely to terminate in death and low risk offenders. Others include, inmates convicted with option of fine and convicts serving 3 years or above but have less than 6months to serve.

The one week long exercise that saw the release of 150 convicts across Delta State, has the breakdown thus:

While 49 convicts were set free from Warri Custodial centre, 46 convicts were released from Agbor custodial centre, 27 inmates from Ogwashi-uku custodial centre, 25 convicts were released from Kwale custodial centre and 3 inmates were set free from Sapele custodial centre.

The CJ in his remark admonished the released inmates and immensely thanked the authorities of the Correctional Service for their support in providing security and ensuring adequate coordination of the inmates during the exercise.

The Delta State Controller of Corrections, Ovie Friday Esezobor, on behalf of the Controller-General of Corrections Ja’afaru Ahmed urged the released inmates to be of good behaviour and ensure that they are gainfully engaged with a choice trade, so as not to relapse to criminality. He stated that this is a nationwide initiative piloted by the CGCS.
He also appreciated the State government, the CJ and his entourage. The press was equally not left out of this wonderful gesture.

COVID-19: Delta State CJ Releases 73 Prison Inmates

As an interim measure to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and further decongest our Custodial centres in Delta State, 73 inmates were released by the Chief Judge, from Agbor and Ogwashi-uku Custodial centres.

The Chief Judge of the State, Marshal Umokoro pointed that the categories of inmates qualified for this release include inmates who are 60yrs and above, those with health issues likely to terminate in death and low risk offenders.

Others include, inmates with minor offenses and inmates who have less than 3 years term left to serve having served a substantial term.

Breakdown
45 male inmates and 1 female inmate today gained their freedom in MSCC Agbor while 27 inmates where freed in MSCC, Ogwashi – uku

At the end of today’s exercise, Controller of Corrections Delta State command Ovie Friday Esezobor, on behalf of the Controller General of Correctional Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed admonished the released inmates to be of a good behaviour and not to relapse to crime and criminality.
He also appreciated the state government for the gesture.

The decongestion process will continue in other Custodial Centres in the State tomorrow.
