This is in order to enlighten the NBA Chairman about the provisions of the new Act and to seek the support of the Association in the full implementation of the Act.

During the visit, the Deputy Controller of Corrections appreciated the Chairman for giving him audience and spoke extensively on possible areas of collaboration in order to ensure the efficient implementation of the non-custodial service in the state.

The Deputy Controller elaborated on non-custodial services such as parole, probation, community service and restorative justice which when fully implemented, would help decongest Custodial Centres across the state and Nigeria at large as well as reducing financial burden on government.

He also noted that the non-custodial service would enable offenders to be rehabilitated while serving their sentence in their communities, hence promoting their reintegration into the society.

Responding, the Chairman NBA, Jos Branch, Barrister Yakubu S. Bawa, appreciated the Deputy Controller and noted that his visit was apt and timely considering the fact that they have been working on their own part to sensitize the Association’s members on the new Nigerian Correctional Act 2019 and the non-custodial service. He said that efforts would be made to organize a seminar/workshop for lawyers and the judiciary where a platform will be given to the Deputy Controller and his team to sensitize them more.

In conclusion, the Chairman assured the Deputy Controller of Corrections of the Association’s support and promised to expedite action towards making the discussions a reality.
