Lawmakers Express Concern over Overstretched Prisons in Nigeria

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Reformatory Institutions has promised to tackle problems of overstretched facilities bedevilling the Nation’s Custodial Centers for effective reformation of inmates.

The Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Hon.Tijjani Zanna Zakariyya, Member representing Machina/Nguru/Karasuwa and Yusufari Federal Constituency Stated this in Bauchi while on the Committee’s oversight function to Custodial Centers in Bauchi State. He noted that the committee will provide adequate remedy to problems of overstretched facilities in Nigerian Custodial Centers.

Honourable Tijjani with his House Committee Members on Reformatory Institutions, supervised the 23 newly constructed cells in Bauchi Custodial Center. They also inspected the Centre’s kitchen, hospital and work-shop.The Committee assured that problems affecting the Centre will be addressed by ensuring the completion of new cells under constructions in various custodial centres across the country. The committee commended the efforts of the Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service CGC Ja’afaru Ahmed and his officers in discharging their duties.

The Committee Members were earlier received by the Controller of Corrections Bauchi State Command, CCS Isa Sabo Kashuri as well as DCC Sulaiman M. Inuwa, Officer in charge Bauchi Custodial Center who took them round the facilities for inspection.
