The Federal Ministry of Power, Works & Housing has put together an anti-corruption sensitization programme for management staff of Works & Housing Sectors of the Ministry aimed at creating awareness and strict adherence to the rule of law and due process in the conduct of Government business.

The Permanent Secretary (Works & Housing), Engr. Abubakar G. Magaji, stated this while declaring open a one-day sensitization programme remarking that the Civil Service is the engine room of the government because it is saddled with the implementation of government programmes and policies.

He stated that government has put in place laws, regulations and standard practice to guide public servant in the conduct of their duties. These he said include; the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Public Services Rules, the Financial Regulations, the Scheme of Service, Public Procurement Act etc, noting that some of the provisions of these laws are often abused and neglected.

The Permanent Secretary said that in order to set things right and take Nigeria to a greater level of development, the present Administration has declared its total commitment to fighting corruption and sanitizing the public service and expects Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to take the lead in actualising these goals.

Earlier in his remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, said that the anti-corruption sensitization programme is specially designed for employees of public and private institutions, and that the essence of the interactive session is to bring the fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes to the doorstep of the MDAs.

Expressing his appreciation to the Minister of Power, Works & Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, and the Minister of State, Alhaji Mustapha Baba Shehuri, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abubakar Magaji, Magu commended the Ministry for buy-in into the anti-graft campaign as EFCC alone cannot fight and win the war against corruption in Nigeria.

The EFCC chairman also advised officers of the Ministry to familiarise themselves with Procurement Acts and other extant laws as they affect the conduct of government business stating that the Commission will not spare anyone found culpable.

The sensitization workshop featured three paper presentations by EFCC resource persons. These include; Activities of EFCC, EFCC Legal frame work and X-raying the work Ethics in the Federal Ministry of Power, Works & Housing.
