Buhari Launches First Eko Disco Control, Data System
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has commissioned the first phase of Eko Electricity Distribution PLC’s (EKEDP) Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system project centre, in Marina Lagos.
The President who was represented by the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, FNSE, FSESN, said the Commissioning of SCADA system project, was the first functional SCADA in West Africa system which would help EKEDP monitor and respond quicker to faults and at the same time reduce the outage durations.
Mamman who reaffirmed Federal Government commitment to ensure that electricity gets to the homes and businesses of all Nigerians, whether unserved or underserved, stated that in the area off-grid electricity supply, the FG recently unveiled the 5 Million Solar Connection Programme, through the CBN’s Development Finance Department.
He said that “it is apt at this point to share the fact that Ministry of Power has launched its Central Data Management System, which is a digital platform of the Nigeria Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative that monitor’s power network across the country, this initiative is part of our efforts to digitalize the Nigerian power sector using new innovative digital technologies and processes that will help address many of the key challenges that our power sector is facing today”
The Minister added that he recently launched the National Mass Metering program supported by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to urgently and immediately address the Metering gap and eradicate estimated billing in the sector under the initial phase of the Presidential Mass Metering Initiative, of supporting the DisCos with the much needed financing for the bulk acquisition of 1,000.000 Meters, the installation of which has no cost to the consumers.
The Chairman, Eko Electricity Distribution PLC’s, Mr. Charles Momoh said that the SCADA is a centralized computer system which represents the evolution of its network operations from physical monitoring remote coverage and relay of network information by contract, SCADA innovatively gathers real time information, identifies loopholes or breaches in the network and necessary analysis and control.
Momoh stated that the SCADA project is an integral part of the strategic business plan towards addressing the Distribution Challenges within 5 years of the power sector’s privatization, with the support of the 2015 Nigeria Electricity Market Stabilization Facility (NEMS) facility, and immediately prioritized this project for execution spanning over three phases and currently controls 14 injection substations in addition to the monitoring of 1000 distribution transformers.
