NEMA Hosts Training on Basic First Aid for Humanitarian Workers in Sokoto

In line with the Federal Government policy drive under President Muhammadu Buhari to build a robust emergency medical service in the country, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has organized a certification/recertification ‘’Basic First Aid Course’’ for staff of the agency, to improve their capacity and further reposition the agency to efficiently and effectively discharge its mandates.

The Red Cross Society which is one of the major partners of NEMA in disaster management which is well known to be one of the major stakeholders in providing humanitarian aid, has been engaged to train the staff to be certified/recertified, hence the staff can apply the skills to meet up with the global standards.

The Director General AVM Muhammadu Muhammed (rtd) has emphasized the commitment to continuously improve on the agency’s staff competence and operational readiness by ensuring that they are provided with the right skills for appropriate management of disaster situations.

The DG added, “the first aid training course is aimed for certification of staff that are going to be trained for the first time and recertification of those that have been previously trained but require to be recertified after stipulated number of years.’’

‘’The application of Basic First Aid is one of the critical components of disaster management. It provides for immediate supports in resuscitating and stabilizing of impacted victims of disasters pending arrival of qualified medical professionals or enroute to medical facilities where they can receive proper care. It is one of the critical skills used by Para-medics in the management of disaster victims prior to arrival of medical specialists.” The Director General stated.

The NEMA DG further stated, “The course is also envisaged to improve and maintain the competency of the agency’s personnel in disaster management and equip them with the life-saving skills. It will enable them with proper usage and handling of First Aid Kits and other aspects in contents of the course. It will also help our Staff to feel more secure and confident when dealing with life threatening emergency situations and minimizing risks.’
