After the PRNigeria Report, Nigerian Prison Pays ‘Elections Duty Allowances’ to Personnel

Less than 24 hours after a report by PRNigeria on the delay by the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, to pay the ‘Elections Duty Allowances’ of its personnel who participated in the 2023 polls, authorities of the NCoS have finally paid the affected officers.

PRNigeria yesterday reported that unlike its sister security and para-military agencies, the NCoS, up till Monday, was yet to pay the ‘Duty Allowances’ of its personnel involved in the 2023 polls.

The delay in the non-payment of the allowances, PRNigeria gathered, provoked the anger of some officers and men of the Nigerian prison service who took part in the general elections.

One of the NCoS officers who is yet to be paid told PRNigeria, while declining to mention his name, that: “Weeks after Presidential and Gubernatorial elections, there are obvious lamentations and disquiet from officers of our Service over the non payment of their allowances.

“Other Services in the Interior Ministry and indeed the Police have paid their personnel. But nothing yet has been heard from our NCoS. There is no official communication from the authority regarding the matter.

“We are just being kept in the dark. We are even afraid we may be denied the allowances or be short changed in the payment at the end, as against what other security agencies paid their officers”.

But according to Mr. Umar, the NCoS spokesperson, the affected officers and men will be paid within this week.

However, PRNigeria gathered that the officers and men of the correctional service who were involved in providing security during the 2023 elections received their alerts yesterday.

Confirming the development to PRNigeria, the NCoS spokesperson said that by Tuesday evening, most of the affected NCoS personnel have been paid.

He said: “This is to inform you that allowances for officers that participated in the just concluded election duties have commenced. By today, all officers involved must have been paid. ”
